Memorial Day
Random thoughts….
Memorial
Day 2010
A day of
remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service
History of Memorial Day
“Memorial Day,
which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who
died while serving in the American military. Originally known as
Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and
became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe
Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family
gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks
the beginning of summer.”
Please never
forget or take for granted our military men and women who fought to secure
our freedoms. Please never forget that while we are enjoying a long
weekend, sleeping in, shopping, going to the beach, or barbecuing, there
are still military men and women facing uncertainty and risking their very
lives so that we may continue to enjoy these endeavors. This
Memorial Day, as we take note of the
red,
white, and blue, let us never forget to remember those who sacrificed
their lives in the service of our great country.
Hopefully, we
will take time out of our busy schedules and stop and think of what
Memorial Day is really about, perhaps we can find the time to pause and
remember those who died for our freedom and reflect on those brave
individuals of the military who died so we can continue to enjoy the
blessings of liberty and live in freedom.
America – Land
of the Free, Home of the Brave!
Maybe better said -
America – Land
of the Free, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE!
In Flanders Fields
By:
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian
Army
In
Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row
That
mark our place; and in the sky
The
larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce
heard amid the guns below.
We are
the Dead. Short days ago
We
lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved
and were loved, and now we lie
In
Flanders fields.
Take
up our quarrel with the foe:
To you
from failing hands we throw
The
torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye
break faith with us who die
We
shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In
Flanders fields.
“And I'm
proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free, and I won't
forget the men who died, who gave that right to me and I'll proudly stand
next to him to defend her still today, 'cuz there ain't no doubt I love
this land, God Bless the USA.” -

On a personal
note, over the years my family had the opportunity to visit with and
travel to family get togethers with Mrs. Chellis (as she was known to
us). Mrs. Chellis always seemed to enjoy our car trips to New
Jersey. She helped make the best of some memorable trips on the Cross
Bronx Expressway with my Dad when the average car speed was 5 MPH. My
Dad did not do well in traffic, but Mrs. Chellis always tried to point
out the bright side of things. It must have worked because my Dad
continued to make trips to New Jersey. When our children were small,
Mrs. Chellis always found ways to make the car trips more enjoyable.
There were car games to be played or songs to be sung. Some of the
most memorable moments for me were her “engaging conversations” with
Ryan. No matter what the topic the two of them always had something
to say. That’s not to say that Thea and I were left out – we enjoyed
discussing the latest Northport news, whether it be related to the
schools, the town, or the latest John Engeman Theater production with
Mrs. Chellis. The conversations were always entertaining. Mrs.
Chellis was a special lady and one that our family will certainly
miss. |

2010-03-14 We received the following very sad news from Pam and
Rob - "We have some very sad news to pass to you all, and below you
can read of our beloved Connor. Rob’s cousin Jane and her husband
Patrick Donohue, have just lost their son. Jonathan and Elizabeth
have grown up very close to Connor and his sister Caroline, so it has
been a terrible loss for them as well. Recently Connor moved into a
new appt. in NYC near Elizabeth’s, where he has been working for a
few years with various non-profits for the betterment of inner-city
children. His new apartment was on the 24th floor where he was
standing on the balcony outside of his bedroom this past Sunday when
the railing broke away and Conner fell with it. It has been just
horrific for his family and our extended family. I speak to Jane
almost daily and we have been very close to this family over the
years, but I’m sure we can’t even begin to imagine their pain. We
were down in NJ with them earlier in the week and will be heading back
there tomorrow morning. Unfortunately it has been in all of
the
newspapers in the city. The apartment building has bolted access to
all of the balconies in this high-rise as there have been other
complaints regarding these balconies.
The story of his wonderful
life is below. Please keep Connor and his family in your prayers.
Love to all, Pam" Please know that our thoughts and
prayers are with you and your family at this most difficult time. (please

2010-03-06 CONGRATULATIONS JORDAN! Aunt Thea and I had a great time watching Jordan
compete in the American
Dance Awards. Jordan's very proud Dad shared the following -
"Jordan won
Overall High Score of the day with this number and won the
regional title as well allowing her to compete this summer in Orlando
for the national title. She also won best choreography and best
costume award. She had a great day!" I
think saying Jordan had a great day may be an understatement! She
was absolutely amazing and it appears the judges agreed!
We are very lucky to have such a talented
young lady in our family. Jordan danced magnificently!

2009-12-25 It truly is "A Wonderful Life" - Just ask Donna and
Geoff . Hope you enjoy the Chellis version of "It's
a Wonderful Life". A special thank you to Geoff for sharing
the video with us. A few
memorable quotes
from the original "It's a Wonderful Life": |
|
Clarence: Remember, George: no man is a failure who has
friends. |
Zuzu
Bailey: Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an
angel gets his wings.
George Bailey:
That's right, that's right.
George Bailey:
Attaboy, Clarence. |
|
Clarence: Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many
other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he? |
Little Mary: Is this the ear you can't hear on?
[whispering in his bad ear]
Little Mary:
George Bailey, I'll love you 'til the day I die. |

2009-07-02 A very special update from Michael Collins:
Katherine Veronica (Norton) Collins, daughter of Michael C. and Anne
O'Connor Norton, will celebrate her 90th birthday on July 13, 2009!
She and her loving husband, William, are still going strong nearing
their 68th year of marriage, living in their own home in Maryland. She
pays the bills, does the taxes and cooks and cleans; he cuts the
grass, trims the bushes, washes the car and drives Mom wherever she
has to go. They are truly grateful to the Good Lord, everyday, for all
of their blessings. They will celebrate the 90th birthday with a
gathering on July11th of their five sons (William, Michael, Joseph,
Gerard and Peter), their wives (Patricia, Nancy, Anita, Cindy and
Cindi) and their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Best wishes
can be sent to their home: 606 Robinson Place Court, Severna Park,
Maryland 21146; or telephone 410 422 9525. (Please do not send gifts.) |

2009-05-16 A special thank you to Joe and Anita Collins for
sharing the following family update: "Michael, how good to see that
you are keeping up the site and the touch of elbows! A short update
on the Collinses of Virginia. Anita and I live in Alexandria with our
two Scotties, Biscuit and Baci. We are generally well, but dealing
with the heartbreak and grief of the death of Anita's younger sister,
Elizabeth in February. Joseph and Jude both live with their families
in Great Falls. Our family is our hobby, so to speak. Joe Jr. has
his own software firm that supports among others, the Dept. of
Education. He is married to Nancy and they have 4 kids: Joey, a high
school student and lacrosse player, Jessica, Madeleine, and Will.
Jude, whose in commercial real estate, is married to Julie Jacobsen
and their babies are Tyler Ann and Addison, both pre-K going on 20.
This week was very busy. 200 miles in the back and forth between
Alexandria and lacrosse games and school plays, and family birthdays.
I retired a decade ago (!) from the Army and am now teaching at the
National War College in Washington and helping my buddies in the White
House and the Pentagon as time permits. Anita says that National may be
as close as I will get to heaven. It is a great job. I am still writing
frequently, usually in Armed Forces Journal or blogging on
national security on the National Journal website.
God bless all who read
this.

Nick's BSA
Eagle Scout Project
A message from Nick (Susan and Tony’s son)
- The Eagle Scout project I plan to do is to replace the church bell stand
at the United Methodist Church in East Northport. Currently the unstable
wooden frame and base may cause the existing bell to fall, break, and
possibly injury someone. I plan to honor and preserve the bell’s historic
character by constructing a new frame. To help fund my project I am
planning a car wash on April 25th (rain date April 26th), 9AM - 3PM, at Pep Boys, 6350 Jericho Turnpike,
Commack. For additional details please
click here to see my flyer. |

St. Baldrick’s Update - We did it! Mikee,
Brian, Geoff and I had our heads shaved!
As you know, we went bald to stand in solidarity with kids fighting
cancer. Even more important, though, we did it to raise money
for life-saving research.
Last year, the
St. Baldrick’s Foundation funded childhood cancer research in a
big way – over $15 million in grants! These funds went to
pediatric cancer experts who are looking for cures today, as well as
to young Fellows and Scholars who will be the experts of tomorrow.
If you are interested in supporting this most worth cause please see
the 2009-02-20 Breaking News item below.
Hope you enjoy the
photos of us fulfilling
our
St.
Baldrick’s commitment. |
